Kicking Off the Year the Cool Way at BMS
5th grade math classes started the month of January by adding and subtracting decimalsâand doing it in a fun, real-world way! đĄââ Students âdinedâ at the Safari Restaurant with a partner (or partners) to practice their skills.
They chose an appetizer, entrĂ©es, drinks, and a dessert to calculate the total cost, figured out the amount with a tip, and then determined what their bill would be without dessert. đœïžđ°
The best part? They loved getting to pick ANYTHING off the menu! đ€Ł Learning is always better when itâs engaging, hands-on, and deliciously fun! #WeAreBenton

Our library loves collaborating with classroom teachers to design interactive lessons and build technology literacy skills across content areas.
We call these special collaborations âLibrary Sidequestsââdays when the library steps away from regularly scheduled lessons to support unique, hands-on learning experiences. Sidequests take place every Monday and Friday and give students new ways to engage with learning.
This year alone, our library has collaborated with ESL, 5th Grade English, Special Education, CBI, 6th Grade English, 7th Grade Social Studies, 5th Grade Science, Keycode, Tools for Learning, Band, Choir, 7th Grade English, 6th Grade Social Studies, and GT classes to support their classroom content.
Learning looks different every day in the libraryâand thatâs what makes it such an exciting place to be! #WeAreBenton

Kicking Off the Year the Cool Way at BMS
Our 5th grade scientists are hard at work making observations and thinking like real researchers! In science class, students are testing five different water samplesâlake water, pool water, rainwater, drinking water, and metallic water.
Theyâre identifying the physical properties of each sample by running hands-on tests and comparing results. Curiosity, critical thinking, and science skills are flowing in these classrooms! đđ

Did you know that just 20 minutes of reading a day exposes students to 1.8 million words a year? đ
Encourage your student to read for fun every dayâit makes a difference!

đœïž Preparing the 21st Century Workforce! đœïž
The Cafeteria Menu Project is a year-long project in EAST at BMS designed to create a large-scale menu that keeps students informed about whatâs being served each day.
Through this project, a group of 7th graders has gained valuable, real-world experience by developing essential workplace skills such as problem solving, collaboration, and project managementâskills that are critical for success in the 21st-century workforce.
Weâre proud of our students for taking ownership, working as a team, and applying their learning in meaningful ways! đđ€

Our art rooms are buzzing with creativity as every grade level dives into sewing projects this month with Mrs. Moore.
đš 5th Grade
Students are starting small and learning sewing basics by creating adorable two-piece snowman ornaments. A perfect first step into stitching!
𧔠6th Grade
Using what they learned in 5th grade, our 6th graders are sewing a more complex 3D formâa flying squirrel! Theyâre working from patterns and building confidence with each stitch.
Early finishers are also helping create festive Christmas decorations for the building, and weâve included some photos of their awesome work.
đŸ 7th Grade
Our most advanced sewers are taking on a challenging 14-piece standing ferret pattern! Theyâre learning how to shape pieces using darts and developing impressive problem-solving skills.
They are also creating holiday pop-up books at the same timeâtalk about multitasking!
No one has finished yet, but check out these process photos showing their hard work and creativity in action.
We are so proud of the patience, craftsmanship, and excitement our students are showing as they tackle these projects. Stay tuned for the finished masterpieces! âš

đ Red Folders đ
Reminder that red folders should be coming back and forth to school each day. Need another one? Let your child's teacher and librarian know. These are an important part of our home-to-school communication!
Inside today, youâll find important log-in information your child will need for school. Throughout the year, the red folder will be the place to check for:
â
Important notes from school
â
Reading logs
â
Letters and updates for families
Please help your child remember to bring their red folder back to SCHOOL EVERY DAYâthink of it as their take-home folder for everything youâll need to know!

BMS Learning in Action: Honoring Veterans Day in Tools for Learning Classes!
Our Tools for Learning classes recently celebrated Veterans Day by learning about the importance of our veterans, the meaning behind our American flag, and the incredible work of our high school JROTC program.
Students had great conversations, asked thoughtful questions, and gained a deeper appreciation for the men and women who have served our country. â€ïžđ€đ
We are proud of their curiosity and respect as they learned more about the true meaning of Veterans Day!
