Kicking Off the Year the Cool Way at BMS!
Our 5th grade science students were hard at work designing water filters using everyday objects! đ§đŹ Each team created a unique filter and tested it on a different water sample, then reflected on how well their design worked.
Hands-on learning like this brings the scientific process to lifeâdesign, test, and reflect in action! Way to go, scientists! đ #WeAreBenton

Benton Middle School has its very own Crochet Club led by our art teacher, Mrs. Moore! đ§¶âš Students are learning how to crochet and love sharing their creations and skills with one another.
Vivian and Angela teamed up to make a giant worm on a string, while Wilneshia showed off her magic circle technique to help others learn.
Thank you, Mrs. Moore, for organizing such a creative and welcoming clubâour students are stitching together skills, creativity, and community! đ #WeAreBenton

Mrs. Heardâs GT students put their engineering skills to the test with a winter-themed STEAM challenge! đ§ Using only marshmallows and toothpicks, students designed and built igloos with a strong base, a catenary shape, and a height of at least 4 inches.
This hands-on project had students thinking critically, problem-solving, and collaboratingâwhile having a sweet time learning! Way to go, cool kids! đđœâïž

In January, our ESOL 1st block students started writing to an ESOL class at Oaklawn STEM Magnet School in Hot Springsâold-fashioned pen pals style! âïžâïž
This exciting exchange gives students an authentic reason to practice writing while building connections beyond our campus. Learning is even cooler when it helps us connect with others! #WeAreBenton

In 7th grade social studies, students are learning about the failure of the Articles of Confederationâespecially the chaos caused when each state had its own currency and no one could agree on its value. đžđ€Ż
To bring this concept to life, each group created their own money and then tried to buy and sell products at a farmerâs market. Students experienced firsthand just how confusing and chaotic trade becomes without a common currency or a reliable way to determine equivalent value.
Hands-on history like this makes the past come aliveâand helps students truly understand why change was needed! #WeAreBenton
There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 19th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Please plan accordingly and enjoy the long weekend! đđŸ

5th grade math classes started the month of January by adding and subtracting decimalsâand doing it in a fun, real-world way! đĄââ Students âdinedâ at the Safari Restaurant with a partner (or partners) to practice their skills.
They chose an appetizer, entrĂ©es, drinks, and a dessert to calculate the total cost, figured out the amount with a tip, and then determined what their bill would be without dessert. đœïžđ°
The best part? They loved getting to pick ANYTHING off the menu! đ€Ł Learning is always better when itâs engaging, hands-on, and deliciously fun! #WeAreBenton

Our library loves collaborating with classroom teachers to design interactive lessons and build technology literacy skills across content areas.
We call these special collaborations âLibrary Sidequestsââdays when the library steps away from regularly scheduled lessons to support unique, hands-on learning experiences. Sidequests take place every Monday and Friday and give students new ways to engage with learning.
This year alone, our library has collaborated with ESL, 5th Grade English, Special Education, CBI, 6th Grade English, 7th Grade Social Studies, 5th Grade Science, Keycode, Tools for Learning, Band, Choir, 7th Grade English, 6th Grade Social Studies, and GT classes to support their classroom content.
Learning looks different every day in the libraryâand thatâs what makes it such an exciting place to be! #WeAreBenton

Our 5th grade scientists are hard at work making observations and thinking like real researchers! In science class, students are testing five different water samplesâlake water, pool water, rainwater, drinking water, and metallic water.
Theyâre identifying the physical properties of each sample by running hands-on tests and comparing results. Curiosity, critical thinking, and science skills are flowing in these classrooms! đđ

đœïž Preparing the 21st Century Workforce! đœïž
The Cafeteria Menu Project is a year-long project in EAST at BMS designed to create a large-scale menu that keeps students informed about whatâs being served each day.
Through this project, a group of 7th graders has gained valuable, real-world experience by developing essential workplace skills such as problem solving, collaboration, and project managementâskills that are critical for success in the 21st-century workforce.
Weâre proud of our students for taking ownership, working as a team, and applying their learning in meaningful ways! đđ€
