The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Benton Middle School a 1,500 grant to support youth literacy. This grant is part of more than $3.4 million the organization awarded to 915 recipients on August 28, 2018. Awarded annually at the beginning of the academic school year inception, youth literacy grants help support teachers, schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the 44 states that Dollar General serves.

"BMS is appreciative to Dollar General and their commitment to education,” said Steve Quinn, principal of Benton Middle School.

Benton Middle School will use the money to purchase copies of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, which will be taught in 7thgrade classes. One goal of adding this book into the curriculum is to provide a high-interest, grade-level appropriate book to encourage non-readers and struggling readers to read both in and outside of the classroom. Teachers also hope to see improvement in the reading comprehension levels of struggling readers.

Thank you to Jenny Parnell for writing this grant to continue to strive for "excellence through education".
